Maya 2020 fundamentals - modelling the real world
Get halfway through a model and find it's an unworkable mess? Can't add edge loops where you need them? Can't subdivide a mesh properly? If any of this sounds familiar check this course out.

You can add a baldness map too to the hair system.

Well if you have overlap due to clump width, then you have essentially answered your own question..reduce the clump width LOL

thats the thing with this type of work, you have to just weigh out the pros and cons and figure whats best for you.

Also try zbrush fibre mesh...paint, deform and decimate it......might be even better and you could palce it where you need it manually too!

Thanks Jay. LOL, I suppose I did answer my own question. The ZBrush exercise will have to wait for another day. A new machine is more important now.

I'm trying to keep the base scene as simple as possible for now. Just using mental ray with MR sun and sky (Mostly default settings). On a sideline I'm experimenting with Vue integration which adds GI and volume shaders (Atmospherics) into the mix.

And growing fields and fields of grass user added image

A small update. I am semi-statisfied with the grass. Still preview render settings so there are some anti-aliasing issues and pixelation in some areas.

Nice results you have with the grass btw, is it fur or pfx?

Thanks. I used pfx for about half. The rest is a tileble texture I made from a top view render of the pfx portion.

The End

The fat lady has sung. When I started this thread 8 months ago, (Time flies when you are having fun user added image ) the goal was to get some hard surface modeling experience using the Focke Wulf as a subject. I feel I have achieved that plus gained some extra experience in Photoshop. I'm sure there are areas that I can still improve and settings that I can tinker with but it is time to move on.

Lessons learned:
1. Have a clear goal. Knowing what you want in the end helps staying motivated and keeps the momentum going.
2. Have realistic expectations.
3. Listen to and accept critique. Try to understand the "why" behind it.
4. Experiment. There are more than one way to relieve kitty of its nine lives.
5. Have fun and don't take it too seriously.
6. Keep autosave on. (Plus a copy of the preferences folder)

Time for a new challenge.

Awesome job, and kudos for finishing. Once I get some assignments finished, I'll be tackling my Panzer, hopefully setting clear and realistic goals for myself.
