Maya 2020 fundamentals - modelling the real world
Get halfway through a model and find it's an unworkable mess? Can't add edge loops where you need them? Can't subdivide a mesh properly? If any of this sounds familiar check this course out.

im currently adding a skeleton to a model but the joint circles are so big that im getting confused where some of the joints are located in my model.

is there a way to make those joint circles smaller?

Yep go to Windows -> Setting and Prefrences -> Prefrences
a box should pop up with all General Preferences for maya.

Go down to Display -> Kinematics and there should be a box and slider with Joint Size written next to it!
