Introduction to Maya - Modeling Fundamentals Vol 2
This course will look in the fundamentals of modeling in Maya with an emphasis on creating good topology. It's aimed at people that have some modeling experience in Maya but are having trouble with complex objects.

Cracks

I have some experience with maya and i want to create an animation where a surface is supposed to crack. I want to show the crack originating from a certain point and spreading outwards. I know that I can create cracks with maya effects but I don't think i can animate them. Is there any way around this other than the long and hard way of creating clusters and animating the vertices?

Well in rostoon's animation thread, he mentioned using blend shapes for his crack. You can model a bunch of the cracks insquences, and add the blendshapes in sequences. I thought it looked really cool how his came out.

Man that's a great idea! Wouldn't have thought of using Blend shapes.

Thanks for the tip. I tried to look for the thread you mentioned but i couldn't find it. So I went and tried the blend shapes idea myself. I still had to manipulate lots of vertices and deal with overlapping edges. could you tip me on how to do it in a simpler way.

He doens't say how to do it in his thread, just said he used blendshapes. I've never done this before, so I can't really help you. You should ask him yourself. An idea I have to approach is to just model the crack first, just to see how it looks. After you finish it, put it in a layer, use it as a reference, then build yourself the model you referenced one at a time, limiting yourself to the amount of geo you used. I think that sounded a bit confusing, so you should ask him yourself. Wish I could help. user added image
