Complex UV Layout in Maya
Over the last couple of years UV layout in Maya has changed for the better. In this course we're going to be taking a look at some of those changes as we UV map an entire character

wow thats amazing. About the wireframe. THe lines don't have to connect? Looks like you grouped and over lapped the shapes for details? And here I am being a sucker loading even the simplest shapes with buncha unncessary lines. haha

Seriously though, did you group the shapes together??

its more than poly structure...
ITS an AMAZING poly structure.
theres a hell load of detail

its must have taken a while to get the uvs laid out clean. i wonder how complex the UV maps must have been, can ya post a screenshot?

A pint of example is worth a gallon of advice!!

Excellent work. What shader do you use to show off just the models?

Or do you use GI Joe?

It looks like an ambient occlusion setup using either dirtmap or mib_amb_occlusion nodes (depends on what version of Maya is being used) in Mentalray. Basically, you connect the outValue of the Dirtmap or mib_amb_occlusion node to any channel of the material (i.e., connect the outValue of the Dirtmap/ Node to the Ambient Channel of a Blinn Shader), then render in MR.

Here's a tutorial that might help you out:
