In terms of facial rigging, theres two options, the first is the ever reliable blend shapes to create different expressions and the other is to use joints/bones in the face. You can also mix the two up if you want.

Where do you want to start?

Hey Jay while we wait for Josiah to reply to you,
can you please tell me what tools in maya you use the most.
I have a feeling I could speed things up a little...
Or what time saving tips\scripts are there to help with Poly Mod..?

Jay-

where are there tuts for either form of facial rigging?
im a complete noob! i need to learn facial riggin, animation, lip sincing, how to add sounds, and have eyes work (with brows, lids and moving balls)

ANY of these would be great, ALL would be priceless!

Sure, I mainly use MJ Polytools for the speedy edgeloop split tool, split poly tool for those awkward bits, lattices, clusters, extrude face, sometimes artisan for smoothing out areas like backs of heads, this saves time on point pulling. Try also moving edges instead of verts, you can reach certain forms alot quicker.

JosiahBrooks

Have a look at Kurts Lyp sych tute with the orc head, that should get you on track.

Cheers

Nice Josiah, you still working on it? Don't give up!

I used to think like you too, "i dont like copying others exactly"
But the truth is, as much as I love my creative freedom and expression it is actually the best move I could make for learning.
Reason being that I have to persevere through the frustration of pushing and pulling Verts... user added image (will try edges too, thank Jay)
and getting the model as close as possible to the original.
Otherwise I would also not really learn how to do a good
replication from a photo etc...
it also trains your eyes and co-ordination, in a way... or am I wrong?!? user added image It is just a personal project for improving myself,
and man it is freaking testing my patience... LOL - I LOVE IT!

JAY! Thanks bro, will have a look at those MJ Polytools
and thanks for all the info\tips.

Cheers

The model looks great.

Not to stray off topic, but what is the name of the book?

Yeah great model, did you use z brush for it? I always am amazed how people make those beautiful renders with z brush (n combination with photoshop and a 3d app.)
so good job, to make the renders more interesting try rolling the eyes to any direction to give it a bit more , but you've done a very good job nonetheless
