Default Polygon Surface Anomolies

Tries posting this in poly's section. See if I can get a response here....

When I create geometry on a polygon model, then soften the normals, I get surface anomolies. I've never figured out what causes them or how to fix them. Can someone help me please.

The areas of my model that are troublesome are shown below.....

try experimenting with the soften/harden edges options.
