Default Hotkeys

Hi guys, I've been using Maya for a couple of days. I've been following the Maya 7 learning foundation guide. The book tells me to use the f8 to f12 keys to display items in the component mode. But when I use these keys my Mac just moves the display windows to minimised or displays multiple maya windows with the different panels. This is driving me crazy. Anyone know where I'm going wrong?
