You can actually get Very Fast renders within indigo! Just turn the max global illumination bounces to something like 15 (its not like you NEED 1000 GI bounces), and Indigo will actually render quite fast!

This in just 8 minutes.

This is a nice Render for being free!
I wouldn't try to use this for movies or anything,
but for just some illustrations and images it's fine...

I like Mental Ray and Maxwell better anyway though... :p

I like the way you set up the lighting in Maxwell (looking at Joopsons Pics) as i've done a bit on light specs so that makes sense to me.

I think that the rendering times compared to the image quality of Indigo is pretty poor (compared to MR, Renderman etc) , BUT it does look like it's able to produce good results if you've got the time, and the big bonus is that its free.

As your doing a raytracing program Matt, its worth you looking into everything and having the knowlage of the interface, method's, quality etc under your belt as it will only make your's better in the long run.

I did a fast test with Mental Ray to show it's power! :p hehe

Arne- that Cornell Box has nowhere near the GI quality of the one rendered in Indigo. However- I am aware that Mental Ray is awesome- the pic from my avatar was rendered in just 3 hours. Indigo would take years :p

Yeah, that's cuz we can leave this or Maxwell (or u can leav Maxwell) on during school, but still is right.

well on my raytracer, I am having problems with certain BRDF models (to be exact, all of them) so I can't add global illumination!

I decided (again) not do do photon mapping but to go back to my path tracing idea, and to take a look at the MLT algorithm, might speed things up a bit.

But I really want to make it work with Maya... first of all, or at least work with any model that comes in (obj & .3ds). But if I learned anything from this it is that I really need to write a .XML parser for my model loading, and shaders, materials, etc.

Oh well, I have a while ahead of me, it's not like I have to finish this project tomorrow or the day after( or the month after, or the year after for that matter).

I didn't use GI...
But I know it could be much better than this!
I only used 20 mins on the "modelling", setting and rendring...

hmmm... interesting? did you use some reflectivity or something? final gather maybe? secondary lights?

please tell me, I am curious on how you did it.

And with Mental Ray Production Quality and Final Gather turned on

hmm- yeah, final gather is considered Global Illumination thogh. Still- looks k00l! I am cooking an Indigo render now, but I plan on leaving it on for about 4 more hours (its at 8 hrs 30 mins now).
