Does anyone know where I could download a free helicopter model?

Hello,
There are plenty of free helicopter models at Turbo Squid.

If you want to import one of the 3DS models into Maya, just go to Window>Settings/Preferences>Plug-in Manager and make sure .3dsImport.Bundle is checked for Load and Autoload.

also you can try find some in simplymaya download page then click on model and choose between "Military & Space Download" or "Aircraft Download"

Then you'll be limited to download .ma, .mb, .obj...on Turbo Squid you can do an Advanced Search which allows you to specify which file types you want (and then you can sort them by price).

I'm not sure which version of Maya you have, but I believe you can install the 3DS importer for the most recent editions using the Bonus Tools from the Area:
