creating jet exhaust-idea question

(1)I'm trying to create that blue/red fire you see in those jets right when they take off. that afterburner you might say. heres a pic:

(2)and along with that I also want to add that exhaust distortion blur
that comes with it:

its hard to see the distortion but i think you guys know what i mean. the same kind of distortion that comes with sun heat.
but anyways I have no idea how to do the second one but for the first one, I thought of creating a dynamic fire effect to some poly inside the engine but that looks more like a campfire than a dense concentrated blue jet fire. is there some specific setting I'm suppose to change on those fires or something?

or for that matter does anyone have any creative ideas?
thanks,

-Dan

i would think a material with a slight glow and incandescence would be sufficient for creating the thrust aspect... as for the blur, i would do that in post-production (in a compositing app).
