This course will look in the fundamentals of modeling in Maya with an emphasis on creating good topology. It's aimed at people that have some modeling experience in Maya but are having trouble with complex objects.

Edge length

Is there a way to find out how long a poly object edge is? is there some type of ruler for that?

there are measuring tools in the Create menu, I believe.

Yup, use the Distance Tool under Create -> Measure Tools. Vertex snap to edge's vertices and you'll see the length of the edge.
