Default Mapping UV's SOS

I'm hello,
Can anyone help me, I have a UV mapping sos one my hands. I am a new user of maya and I am having problems mapping UV for my character.

I have maped the UV's and take a snapshot to put into photoshop to put the characters colour on, I then bring it back to Maya. I put the map onto a blinn and it looks fine, but when I put it onto the character, it goes all wrong!
the status line comes up with aerror message: Error while parsing arguments!!
I don't know this means or how to fix it PLEASE Help
Thank you
