Surface Selection ...

I have a very complicated piece of geometry I need to tesselate (approximate) in Mental Ray, in Maya. I need to know if there is a way to isolate or display regular NURBS surfaces from trimmed NURBS surfaces. I need to approximate them separately in Mental Rays Approximation Editor. Trying to pick out the surfaces in the wireframe is really time consuming. Being able to quickly select the surfaces separately would be a great help.
