Default Object not found error?

I've started to get these quite a lot in my scene. It pops up in the script editor. All my functionality is ok, except that I can't change my material's hardware texturing settings (it only gives me the option "none", thought the colour texture does show). The warning pops up not when I select the object, but usually when I select the material.

What's causing this? I've exported/imported objects and renamed them several times, can't think of anything else.
