Default Grid disappears

For this project I'm working on, I'm using "feet" for my dimensional settings to get a good ratio height to a person. I set my cube height to six feet, then the "grid" (not sure what it's really called) suddenly starts to disappear whenever I move it. It even stays like that after I deleted the object. Anyone know what to do about this?
