Default annoying selection problem

Hi Guys

When I have an object selected and go in component mode, let's say for the sake of argument vertices and I select them, if there is an object behind it, it will select the other object and will deselect the current object leaving component mode.
Do one of you guys know where to turn this off?
Because it's driving me bonkers
