Tutorial Overview

In this short animation project with we’ll look at how we can save a lot of time when creating facial animations by mirroring blend shapes from right side to left and using an animation deformer. Creating blend shapes in Maya can be a time-consuming process, so duplicating over and using the techniques shown here can save you hours of work.

  • Mirroring Blend Shapes
  • The Wrap Deformer in Maya
  • Connection Editor
  • Creating Face Controls
  • Controlling & Moving Blend Shapes
We start off on a polygon head with the blend shapes already created on one side and use the Wrap deformer to drive the blend shape over. To create face controls we import a control curve which is connected to the blend shapes through Maya’s connection editor. This tutorial was created for Simply Maya by Jason Edwards who's a Senior Artist at Digital Domain. If you want to know more about his work or follow along with the 3D graphic novel he creates in Maya you can have a look at his website. You can also read an interview with him here.
