In this interesting project we create a mystical Centaur creature. The tutorial covers all the different aspects of modeling a realistic looking creature in Maya from start to finish and it is rated for intermediate users because of the very high level of detail on the final model. We'll go over the modeling process for the head, eyes, mouth, body and armour.

You will begin this tutorial by setting up image planes to aid you in getting the correct size and proportion of the model using NURBS for the initial shape. Once you have roughed out the size of your creature you will learn how to convert geometry from NURBS to polygons while maintaining the same topology on the model. We then gradually add resolution in certain areas to get the fine details and work with different polygon modeling tools and sculpting techniques in Maya to create a high polygon mesh. We convert over to subdivision geometry to get a very realistic look on the model and during this process you will get a good idea of how you can create your own high resolution models. The techniques taught in this tutorial can be applied to creating realistic humans in Maya as well as other high polygon models.

The subdivision - high polygon modeling workflow in this project is used both in organic and hard surface modeling when creating an extremely detailed and realistic model.
