In a way you could apply the same technique as box modelling a car. Get a front and side view reference shot of the boot/shoe first and then look around on the net for maya car tutorials. Apply the same technique and you should come out with something half decent :)

You may try the excellent Joan of Arc's tutorial http://www.3dtotal.com/ffa/tutorials/max/joanofarc/armourleg1.asp
it's for 3dmax, but you can adapt to Maya with ease.

I know this is old forum but I also have same problems and want answer. If you are there and any other can answer. I am beginner so and you say that use same technique that you are using in box modelling car i can't make box modelling properly so i don't know all techniques of car modeling so can you explain how boot/shoes model create with car modeling techniques .......? :(

I am trying to model Gene Simmon's monster boots and am having difficulty coming up with the best way to model the scales that go up the leg, The shoe I have modeled. Any ideas on how to model those scales (pictured)? I think it all needs to be one mesh since I need to pose him and the legs of the boot need to follow the leg bones. Not crazy about modeling individual scales all the way up the leg (ugh). Could perhaps a texture work as opposed to modeling the scales? I’m not sure because the scales actually flare out.
