View Full Version : Boat model needed for photo project. Feel like helping?

I would like to try a photo-realistic combination of a mermaid on a rock (photo) with a stormy sea and fishing/cargo boat or old sailing ship, for example, crashing on rocks and battling waves in the background.

If anyone has such a boat they can donate to the project, it would be much appreciated!

I'm pretty decent at shading/texturing in Maya (though I haven't touched it in 5 years so I need some refreshing) so even a bare model would be great.

The ocean and rocks should be straightforward enough...

Obviously a significant contribution would entitle a contributor to use the end result in his/her own folio.

Thanks for listening :)

ok, perhaps someone can help me do it on my own?

I downloaded this free model: http://gunpoint-3d.com/model-PBoat.html

and converted it from .3ds to .obj format using Quick3D, but once it is imported, the mesh can't be ungrouped at all, which makes it useless.

Is there a way around this?

Is there a better freeware/shareware model out there?

ok, after getting zero response I went ahead and bought a model in .obj format but when I import it into maya, I get the error message that a single mesh was created, which makes it useless.

Feels like I am actually going backwards on this one. Should have stayed in bed :)

I use Deep Exploration (by Right Hemisphere) for converting from one source to another. Link the 3ds model here and I will convert it and attempt to get it to you in ma/mb or FBX formats. It's up to you...

no offense to anyone in this thread, but i can't help but find it slightly humorous that foto-z actually asked 'perhaps someone can help me do it on my own?'

because if you were to do it on your own, you wouldn't illicit the help of fellow maya-ers (mayans? oh who knows.)...

that being said and done, what objects do you actually plan on having as 3d objects? the mermaid? the rocks? the sea? the boat? the crew? the sky?

what happens at the end? what are major plot points to your animation? giving details such as this will provide information to those willing to help devote some time to such a production, and will also allow them to know how much work they have in front of them to be able to help you out in a meaningful manner without sacrificing too much of their own private time.

Neostrider,

ok, you caught me there. Not the best choice of words.

Btw, this is for a single still, not an animation.

Pretty much everything but the mermaid and rock will be CG.
