i started this some time ago in another 'space and thread.'
I found that using the 'preview' feature (new to 2008  ) did bad things to my geometry going back to 'normal' mode , probably because i am no expert and my lines were not incredibly clean. now i duplicate the object before 'previewing' it.., that is why two cars in this scene.., i will delete the smoothed one as soon as i have looked at it and evaluated.., 30 seconds??? i have left it here for your evaluation.., normally i dont save them with the scene. i have started this from scratch again.., new thread.., new object! long ways to go. |

a lot of crashes, doing finicky stuff.., then crash.., man.., i wish there was an auto save.., even the file was corrupted.
not much difference can be seen but a good 6 hours work.., probably 2 or 3 if you consider the crashes. lucky i increment save or i would have lost a lot more, the whole file, anyway...., here it is.., |

a little more.., a few verts here and a few verts there
|
Well, what you have so far is looking good.
Not too much to go on right now ;) Though, I too enjoy modeling little cartoon style cars. Theres something nice about not having to follow exact blueprints, and to also see what you accidentally come up with ;) Looking forward to updates! |
no accidents so far (pun). still putting along.., tut tut !!
the tut is based on what the 'student' feels to do. i did notice it change radically between chapters.., without explanations or even it being pointed out, its a fairly lose tut, yes ! :) |
Visions of Wacky Races comes to mind..hehe
Now I am showing my age , a good start but six hours ..hmmm |
1 Attachment(s)
i was wrong.., there was a big accident and it relates to that 6 hours.., i spent a lot of time shaping.., but too early.., i hadnt finished blocking it out.., slowly i begin to learn th iimportance of modeling in stages and blocking out is the foundation.., of course that sounds completely obvious.., but its not.., it deceptive. i shaped in too much around the wheel wells andnow i cant make the wheel wells .., too much geometry.., too many curves.., not enough straight lines
say good bye to this one.., i have to start it again.., why not eh.., live and learn but yes, the idea WAS to have a few of these on st. i have some of my own designs but i wanted to learn the techniques (and learning i am, by mistake) and put them in a set. as i said some where./., i hope i do it within the year.., school starts Monday (orientation) M:) |
Well, I'm sorry to hear you had to re-start, though from looking at your wireframes. You didn't actually have an unmanageable amount of geometry.
In fact, I can see there is an ideal surface area for modeling wheel arches, where you would want them. Anyway, good look with your project. And remember... Don't give up on a project every time you hit a speed bump (no pun intended) ;) |
that was so pun intended(above)
Looks good. Ive never done anything cartoony. sounds fun. I love exaggerated proportions. |
i like the shape of the car so far....keep it up
|
younglion; many thanks.., the next will be better :) trust me.., it is important to BLOCK first.., as kurt says in all his tuts.., he says that for a reason i discovered today.., and it takes more than 'it is important to block things out first, i cant stress that enough' to understand it :) thanks again :) if i continued, serious topology problems and not a nice look.
twisteddragon33; hey yea, cartoon is fun.., what will be good is it will have a realistic render.., that will be interesting. how this one was designed was.., take a photo of a police car, fire engine, whatever.., take it into PS., mask, copy, paste, clone.., all the usual Matt tools and c exaggerate the proportions in PS.., take it into maya.., and BLOCK it out ( :) ) and think ahead.., how will i do this.., i out smated myself in this one. thanks mate :) Mayaniac; i dont speed (pun intended), yea the lines look good eh?? i agree but there is too much curvature in Z to extrude without problems in this situation. I found that as i was bailing out the water. and using the split poly tool.., err, disaster!! no one is giving up mate, this is not a competition :) this is me trying to learn and do the best i can. it would take longer to do what you suggest than start again.., after all it is only extruding a cube. no problem :) no need to be sorry to start again.., im happy to learn and do it properly. many thanks. |

looking better already :)
|
Well, I'm still sorry to see the original go. It had a nice shape going on.
But, I'm still looking forward to seeing how this one turns out. Oh, and one thing... You should delete the bottom faces. This way you wont have to have a cluster of edge loops around the bottom to hold a sharp Edge. Good luck! |
1 Attachment(s)
hey thanks for that tip.., much appreciated.
ill think you'll agree.., its looking better already.., and you can see i am watching out for the tire wells as i go.., taking them into account from the start. many thanks M:) |

cleaner lines by far..,now you see why i started again.., i was aware of too many errors.., outsmarting myself. you know, the competitive spirit the people with little knowledge come sometimes be inflicted with.., like me !! have to prove a point!! :attn:   :alien:

im calling it a day.., first day of orientation tomorrow.., 2 years of CGI..??
anyway.., back to where i started.., i mean before i started again.., im much happier with these results. |

and the wheel wells.
|

with a little colour to check out the 'topology' (sounds like i know what im doing eh?? :) )
|
Looking very cartoon-y ;)
Well I have to hand it to you, the new model turned out better than the first! Nice work! Now we need some wheels! 8) |
1 Attachment(s)
thanks, im slowly gaining some understanding, but the reason im doing this tut is so i can research more cars like this and model them. it already looks like a cartoon.., and its an actual car
1st prize to anyone who knows its name.., no.., its not 'herbie'.., sheesh !! M:) |

1st day of two years of CGI today.., gotta go.., but still had time for some quick work.
colours are not the best.., its my 'preview' colours for preview mode.., this is a dup.., i have never used 'preview' on the model.., these have all been duplicates because i am sure hitting 3 for preview on maya 2008 changes the verts. |
Looking like a cute cartoon character car ...
Nice work so far. Howd you go about doing the extrusion for the wheel area? |
1 Attachment(s)
hi mate, pretty basic stuff.., if you follow the thread you can see it gave me trouble..., i (this one) kept the planes as flat as poss and as simple as poss.., them shaped the wheel wells with the verts.., having planned where the verts shoud be before i even started the model, i deleted the faces underneath then extruded from the side.., taking into account the smoothing operation would make it 'doughy' as they say in the tut. then i deleted the faces underneath where the wheels will go.., and then merged verts.., i mean i had to merge edges via verts (yu know what i mean !!)
quiet an operation for me.., taught me a lot actually.., main thing.., think ahead (you know this but i only just found out.., the hard way as usual :) ) thanks mate.., nice to see you here :) anyway i did some more.., as i said.., the actual model i have never used preview on.., i only duplicate it to look at it in smooth.., a sort of superstition :) cheers mate. |

45 degrees i think..:)

you found me :) yea, i saw that too.., i think its a model leg.., i know it is.., its a mannequin's leg, theres nothing attached to it.., ive looked and looked..?? its the lighting i think that makes it look real ??
got good eyes there my friend :) :) cheers steve :) |
It's coming together nicely!
Though It looks nothing like the Car in the Pic you posted. Keep the Updates coming. |
its not the car i posted.., the car i posted is one i want to do after this and this tut is helping me understand the techniques.., this is a tut im doing.., one that leaves a little room for you (my) own tastes. (i realize its a little 'un-cool' for the better modelers to do tuts but i dont know much so i have to)
no no.., this is a tut mate. thanks.., i think it is coming on well too. |
1 Attachment(s)
hey marlonjohn.., i have increment saved 9habits from post sound.., a new project each day) and i found this.., imagine adding a few more edge loops around the base (wheels) and then pushing the verts into as much a wheel shape as poss.., the deleting the bottom faces.., then extruding in from the sides (faces) ect.., as i have already explained.., actually i should put up the wire for the car as it is noo too.., you will get a better idea of it.
|
hmm..?? i cab see an edge i havent merged under the car.., best i fix that
|

door handle, windshield and rear view mirror
|

and the wire.., think i better go in and look at the position of the handle.., maybe its the perspective?? looks OK when i modeled it..???
|
1 Attachment(s)
this is the model in smooth.., had to pull a few verts.., any crit before i move on with it.., past here there is not much i can fix if need be.., so im looking for advice, crit.., whatever.., to me something looks not right.., but at the same time it looks fine.., so obviously im not sure about .., either my skills.., or the model.., or both
any hlp very welcome. |
Looking good mirek. Are yyou going to do windows for the back seat?
|
1 Attachment(s)
thanks agent dick..:)

again
|

and rear
|
as one can see.., im still getting used to the smooth operation.., there seems to be verts that do not act as they should..,
|
1 Attachment(s)
maybe i was being fussy.., reading about it or not seems to make little difference.., im getting black screens on the perspective view.., crashing.., blah blah.., im moving on with this.., i suspect its because i have all the settings in foot.., im getting unexpected .., actually totally unexpected because i didnt set them.., in my preferences.., i dont think ill be using 'foot' ever again.., ill leave it default.., im thinking of going back to maya 6.5., i have lost at least 60% time today on crashes.., and bad smooths?? of course this isnot happening to others i already know that so i guess it me and this computer.., because this does not happen at all on the mac, then again.., iver never used foot.., and i think there must be a box thats not chesked that i dont know about.
still haven't done the wheels.., and the reason i stated this was to learn the lighting and render.., anyway.., next is the wheels.., or whatever trim it needs |
