April challenge - cb8rwh - normal

ello all,

gonna give this a shot but I really am a noobie at this organic modelling - figure I will certainly learn summat by giving it a whirl.

My character is going to be called 'Asswiperon' - his name suggests what his role in Hell consists of - wiping satan's hot ass. Hope this doesn't offend anyone.

There's going to be lot's of TP involved :)

I would post some concept drawings but I blow at frawing and don't want to embarrass myself any further.
I think I will go thru Mike's head modelling tutorials for the head then tweak a lot to get the form of the head then take the body from there - is this ok?? do I HAVE to to have concept drwaings?

cb8rwh 02-04-2003 01:18 PM

ello,

have started trying to model a form of a head - i am going to model a normal human head then hopefully reshape using lattices into a more demonic ass wiper head.

I have gone for basura3d's method. I have tried loads of different methods in the past but this, so far, seems to be the one I am going to go for from now on. If you want a tutorial on this (although based on 3dmax) go to www.3dtotal.com freestuff, tutorials, 3dmax, complete projects, joan of arc, then head. the tutorial seems pretty thorough.

I am using a source head shot from fineart.sk - it is just the base - I am hopefuly going to change the look totally.

any c&c

got a bit of a problem - when I smooth this section shows a hard edge or an edge you can see, so I try to merge th emultiple edges and get the following result. Anyone got any ideas how to get rid of the hard edge when smoothing?

alexgc 03-04-2003 12:54 AM

hey cb8rwh, what u need to do is select the edge u r having trouble with, and then go to

edit polygons>normals>soften/harden

goto to the options box and move the angle slider some way to the soften side (I tend to slide it all the way to soften) then click on apply.

That should do the trick :)

M 03-04-2003 07:26 AM

I always just select my whole model.. and then soften the whole thing (slider all the way to right). Should work, from what i see there, you wont even need to smooth it if you use a soften/harden technique, it will smooth it right out with the same number of poly's... it should make it perfect, if not.. you can always smooth :).

cb8rwh 03-04-2003 08:28 AM

cheers guys,

I tried to soften/harden but it stayed there :( it seemed to think it was a border edge!! so I just deleted the incriminating faces and used append poly tool to put them back. seemed to do the trick.

will usw the soften harden thing to look at model while modelling then probably smooth when rendering.

Attaching ears is an official pain in the ass!!

bit of an update. This is the basic head shape i am going to settle with - don't know how to add things like wrinkles - bump map??

ears are a bit of a botch job - didn't really have a clue how to attach them, just as well you can't see behind them :)

C&C welcome

mtmckinley 03-04-2003 07:05 PM

looking good. :)

Pony 04-04-2003 02:43 AM

like the eyes.. are you going to do pointy eyebrows also ? would look good.

evening all.

trying to start on the body, but as usual I get so far and get stuck as to how to go forward. It looks like the following at the moment - modelled in nurbs so far.

Any ideas how I move forward? I know I need to add detail but I am finding it more and more difficult.

struggling on the body big style, so I thought I would go back to the head. Added some horns - any good or too symmetrical??

M 04-04-2003 09:57 PM

hey man, keep it up! I suggest making those horns a bit more sharp :). It kinda looks like baby dino horns atm :(. The face and body really are coming along though, good job!

cb8rwh 04-04-2003 10:38 PM

changed the horns and tweaked the nose, chin (thanks to jimmy hill for that reference :) ) and the ears. added a bit of colour to the eyes

well I said he wipes satans ass - and because it's a smelly job he needs some sort of defence :D

caligraphics 05-04-2003 08:45 AM

created a body to attach the head to. pretty basic - got the reference from fineart.sk again. will modify to look a bit older decrepid(sp?) looking at pictures of gollum for ref.

Witchy 08-04-2003 11:57 PM

Looking great!

added a bit of a harness - you will have to guess what gets attached to it :D

M 10-04-2003 12:31 AM

Lol, sure looks evil :)....... ........ .......

Anyways, i love the model so far, it really looks nice :D. Just he does remind me of some kinda powerranger with horns. I would like to see what you end up doing to this man :), so far the model is great, just doesnt have that "evil" look to him... thats not the real challenge though, so this would definately be in the "hell" category, just not in the "evil hell" category :). Keep it up.

well here is a bit more :D

Vectorman 10-04-2003 11:26 PM

i wouldn't say organic newb! I'd like to see more body detail like the head!

el_newty 11-04-2003 06:30 AM

HA HA HA :D toilet paper!!!

Kevin 11-04-2003 07:01 AM

LMFAO funny as hell LOL

contrast 11-04-2003 01:27 PM

Looking good! One question, when you attached his body together did you keep him as nurbs or did you convert to polys? Thanks. Looking forward to more pics.

Witchy 11-04-2003 03:22 PM

Excellent. LOL

cb8rwh 11-04-2003 07:44 PM

cheers guys,

vectorman - I def need more detail but that is where I get stuck - adding detail to the body - I find it really hard to progress past this point :(

contrast - the main chest/abdomen area was nurbs - arm was nurbs - think leg was polys - head was polys - converted thorax and arm to polys and then combined and merged verts. Took a bit of tweaking after that to smooth it out.

el_newty, kev, witchy - cheers. before you say anything - no I haven't got a faecal fetish

adldesigner 12-04-2003 08:50 AM

OMG.
<adldesigner f*cking laughing his *ss off>
Stumbled upon this thread ... Hahahaha! God I needed that laugh.

you need refs to get an idea of what body detail looks like. They can be obtained from blueprint sites like this one

http://www.onnovanbraam.com/index.ph...e&group=update

Also i just noticed that his Forearms seem thicker than his biceps, might be the angle tho

cb8rwh 13-04-2003 12:34 PM

heh - thats the one I am using :) i have got so far but just find it difficult to add detail to the body - will make a big effort to add some more tho - just a bit busy this weekend with gf

i will have to check the forearms - I don't honestly know if they are thicker or thinner but I guess they should look thicker from any angle - changes are required - cheers vectorman

ereitz 13-04-2003 06:16 PM

depends how cartoony the character is - if you take the jaw as a reference he could be pretty exagerated - think of popeye with his oversize forearms - if you did that you wouldn't want it to look like an accident though...

nice model! the character is great - it's easy to imagine him in a hilarious animation - plans for that?

cb8rwh 14-04-2003 07:19 PM

cheers for the ideas - I don't know about an animation - I will def rig him and see how good it looks when moved around.

just going to try and define his body more than it is first tho

Snich 14-04-2003 08:35 PM

This is awesome! He needs to have some toxic waste disposal gloves on or something. Of course then the fingers would be cut out since he's in hell and all :D Nice work!

cb8rwh 15-04-2003 07:54 PM

cheers snich - never thought about adding some gloves, thanks for that - will def do it, and I m going to put some clothes of a sort on him - as well as some wellington boots (that's wht they are called in england not sure about the rest of the world - maybe gumboots?)

cb8rwh 15-04-2003 09:45 PM

well here is an update - rubber boots and some gloves of the rubber variety as well :D

I know, I know they might melt in hell, but hey, artistic licence :)

adldesigner 15-04-2003 09:51 PM

LOL ... excellent work mate.

Vectorman 15-04-2003 09:55 PM

can a see a shot of the body without the tp maybe a little closer? His knee looks iffy.

But the boots and gloves are a nice touch.

here is a close up shot - very basic body form I know - see the previous few posts regarding me and struggling to add detail :(

gonna put some garments on it tho for this comp.

cheers for all c&c guys - appreciate it
