Current object vertices selection

When I have a selected polyshape and I want to select some vertices - objects in the background "tend" to get selected, too.

in the Arm tutorial by Craig Daughtrey - (as in the image I attaced) - he selects vertices with a window selection and the object behind it DID NOT get selected - Is there a parameter to change taht ?
