blue flower photo (56K warning)

on friday my new digital cam arrived (hp photosmart 850), and i had a lot of fun with it :)

so i thought i share a pic i done with it. in this i tested the macro focus with flash. i am no longer sure why some people do complain about the "lousy" macro capabilities of digital cams. another myth (at least with the hp 850) is short battery life. i am very satisfied how long the batteries last in it. at least after i switched to a set of 2000 mAh nimh rechargables.

but back to the picture - the orignal pic right out of cam was 2272x1712 (992 kb). the only retouch i did to it - was reduce the size to 50 % for this 1136x856 (286 kb) picture.

c&c welcome

:) Looks nice BabyDuck!

How do you store the pics in your digital camera. What are your formats?

BabyDuck 09-03-2003 06:01 PM

oh - the hp photosmart 850 stores the pictures on a secure digital (sd) card or on mmc cards. the still shots are stored in jpeg with 2 resolution settings: 4MP - 2272x1712 or 1MP - 1136x848. and then each has 3 compression settings (good, better, best). the shot above was with 4MP and "better". video clips are stored in mpeg format. and i will replace the included 16 mb card soon with a 128 mb card. for more information have a look here: http://www.steves-digicams.com/2002_reviews/hp850.html

thanks

how many pictures of the above quality (wich seems very nice in my opinion) can you store in 16 or 128 MB?

how much did it cost you?

Yea babyduck.. i also have a digital camera like yours made by sony, specifically for taking high high quality photos. Supposively batterlife and macro quality was "a problem" like you were saying.. but I LOVE IT...Macro is awesome :D.

the file above (only twice the size) was 992 kb, as i said in first post. the manual says that you are supposed to fit 13 of such in a 16 mb card. it usually compressed better than the manual says - i get about 16 in the 16 mb card. but then the manual says that you can fit 71 of the lowest quality and small size. that i cannot second. the "promised" average 200 kb per picture turned out not to apply. especially with a lot of trees (many branches, especially hard on jpeg) the 71 images were reduces to 31 . it was merely a compression thing? nope. the cam does a very bad job compressing the 1 megapixel shot. testing a bit after that to find out why, i figurered out that the same shot that turned the image bigger than the manual hints in 1 MP made a smaller than hinted image in 4 MP.

oh i guess too much - i paid EUR 580 for it. it is the bonus of living in germany. and another thing that made the price that high - i completely disapprove of buying stuff online. i want to WALK to the store incase of a warranty issue.

nice pictures otaku. :) i like that there is some background to it. i usually forget about the whole plant and only concentrate on the blooming thing.
