Background color & ambient light

Hi I'm rendering a scene with mental ray, I take my camera and set the background color to blue.
when I render it using mental ray, it affects all my material's ambient color, so the scene is quite blue like the background color.
any way to prevent this??

yes. Don't have the environment blue on the cam. With FG it uses the enviroment to sample the starting light engergy for the surface of the object. If your not useing FG I don't think it should afect your render like that. FG being one of the settings in Mental ray.

edit: Oh if you really want your background to be blue but you need that soft FG look. you could always have it make a alpha map so you can do a composit in photoshop with a blue background.

err......

I'm not using final gathering :(

Just a simple Mental Ray render cause it handles geometry a lot better than Maya's default renderer.

I just want a plain cartooney blue sky, but it affects all materials in my scene.

I'll have to composite it then...

oh well sorry.. I'v never rendered with out FG.. LOL
but yeah that would be my gess and work around. OR.. you can retern your envirment color back to black, and use a very big blue sphere, big enufe that you like the afect. that would work just as well.
