grouping and parenting

Hi,

I'm confused about grouping and parenting. In the following picture I have created two blocks (top pic) and moved the pivot point of the right block to its left end.

In the middle pic I've parented the right block to the left one, and tried to rotate the right one, only to find that instead of rotating around its pivot point it shears to a bizarre shape.

If I instead group the two blocks (3rd pic) then I get the result I was expecting.

Is this normal ? How do I get a result like the 3rd pic with parenting rather than grouping ?

Thanks,
Pete.

If you're looking to just rotate the right block, you don't really need to parent or group anything. Parenting is used for when you want the right block to move when you move the left block.

hehe.... I want that to happen too :) That was just a cut down version test model. If I add another block it looks like:

I still get this shearing when I parent rather than group ?!!

The shearing is usually caused by non-uniform scales. Make sure all the scale values on the blocks are the same. Simple solution is to Freeze Transforms on the blocks (you can affect only the scale attribute in the Freeze Transforms options box).

Cheers, the fact that I had scaled the objects is the problem ! If I create the blocks of the right size without scaling, then parent, then it works fine.

I just looked up freezing in the online help, and tried doing that to the scaled blocks before I parented them, but I still get the shearing. Any idea why ?

>> Solution = I'd only freezed the transforms of the two right hand blocks. I also had to freeze the transforms of the parent of the child I was rotating.

Cheers,
Pete.
