Old tutorial - needs help AGAIN!

I'm following this tutorial on making a matrix bullet effect.. I'm having trouble on adding all the particles and stuff.

I'm not sure how to do it since it's an old tutorial not for maya 8.5

I click on Add attributes, but it wont let me uncheck scalar as the tutorial says..:(
