Changing the strength of a displacement map

How do you change the strength of a displacement map?
Im trying to use one on my elephant model
so you think id be better of with a bump map?

Im doing black= depression white=flat
my grey ranges from 10% to 100% and they are all far too deep is there any way to change this

Well depending on the scale of the model... I think bump mapping is the way to go.
Displacements are too processor and RAM hungry.

Well, if it's ok if I jump in here I'd like to know how to adjust the displacement amount of a displacement map regardless of whether bump mapping is the better choice for elephantinc.

Could someone please explain how to adjust the displacement amount?

I've been trying to figure out how to adjust the amount for a while. It's so simple to do with bump maps, but I see no obvious method of doing it with displacement maps.

Thanks to anyone who can help. And thanks for asking for me elephantinc!

You can adjust it via the color balance section on the texture.
