At what age...

...did you all first get into 3D modelling? The reason I ask is that I'm 22 and between a 'noob' and a 'norm' in ability and am feeling that I have left it too late to work my level up to use my ability to gain full time employment status. Currently I'm working making as built structures (www.offsetservices.co.uk) and I'm trying to break into CG desperately but only have my spare time to improve. Do I realistically have a hope of getting a job learning this software on my own in my spare time?

Thanks for your input guys.

I'm 14 and I started about a month ago. I was doing pretty well to start off and then I sort of slowed down.

I'm an avid hobbiest and 38, you have probably heard this before, but..."if I had my chance again I would do what I truly want to do". I simply love 3d but work as a psychiatric nurse with a wife, two kids and a mortgage. My wife is very supportive but for me to jack in my job and risk £10k on a three month intense training package remains a hell of a risk that I am unsure of taking. So I understand only having your free time to improve while juggling your other responsibilities.

I imagine if you have love for what you want to and understand the tools you use then you will achieve your dream. Perhaps others here with industry experience can add to this...

Im 25 (just) and got into 3d modeling a few months ago because of my university course that i'm doing. Been into 2d Photoshop, flash and avid video editing for quite a few years now

Yep. 22 is WAY too old to begin learning a new skill. Maybe if you were 21 I would say go for it but 22? You should probably just turn off your computer and pick up a shovel;)

Seriously, dude. Age has absolutely nothing to do with it. Let me repeat that for the people in the cheap seats. AGE HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH IT. Its all about how bad you want it and about planning a course of action. Bust your ass and eat breath and sleep what you want and you have every chance of making it happen at any age.

So sayeth the monkey.

A dude after my own heart!! I started dabbling in 3d at 25 on and off as I was really into PS big time. But then I saw some spheres rendered on a chequer background, you know that ol' number.

The rest is now stuff of legend...:bandit:

Wow... 11 years of 3D. No wonder you're so good!

Jay 29-09-2005 07:44 PM

LOL

Thanks man, but theres some killer modelers out there right now, and now zbrush has become a much needed part of the armoury, it looks like I'll be investing in that soon to play catch up.

Im 19. I started like 2 days ago. I started Uni on a Games Programming course, but i can have an extra module where i have to make a simple model to get accepted to the course, so i need to learn Maya in 10 weeks.

Good Luck dude, you're in the right place to learn very quickly. Get those manuals out too though!!

Kind regards

Jay

I'm 24 and started when I was 21. So i'm into my 4th year of this and now 5 movies later..... I feel "weathered"!! ;) it's never too late to start but you may be playing catchup to 22 year olds that having been doing it longer, at uni for example (doesn't make them better necessarily though!)

I expect to play catch up with the youngsters if I can get on a masters course next year ;) - 29 years young!

Did a couple months on Specular Infini-D (Mac) in 95 and then somehow diverted into web stuff and programming. Did a couple months last year but am fully into it now in my spare time :D

I have been using 3D for 8 years now. I started with Bryce then went to Cinema 4D, then finally arrived at Maya, and never looked back.

John now aged 14, 6 when started 3D.

25 and have been working with 3D since 2001, and I am busy working on my reel, never to late.

If you feel to old, open your own studio.
