Grow Selection?

I think something is wrong, can someone please try this and let me know if it works with you.

Select any one face on your object. Then go...
EDIT POLYGONS > SELECTION > GROW SELECTION REGION

When I do this, nothing happens and it deselects the polygon. Shouldn't it select more polygons? It works fine with vertices but not with faces?
Using Maya 6.

I've noticed that it sometimes doesn't work. Not figured out why yet.
