Light Flicker

Hi, Can anyone suggest ways of creating a flickering light effect? Im trying to create a small camping light but i guess an effect of a candle flicker would work. How would i go about this?

Thanks for any help

Steve

this one is really tricky to get through maya's UI. I suggest asking this to someone who can work a bit of MEL magic, I dont know MEL so I can't really help.

sorry

you should write an expression to control the intensity of the light. Setting it to a random number every few frames should do the job.

oh right good idea thanks!

So something like... LightShape1.intensity = rand(0.5,1.5); ??

what kind of light do you think would be best? i was thinking a point light, but it seems to create quite a harsh light and the ambient light lights up a bit too much of the area....

I would be greatful for any sugestions!

Thanks for your help!

you should never really use ambient lights for lighting as they flatten out the scene by not casting shadows etc and thus applying even light everywhere (they suck ;)) put decay on your point light and it wont be so harsh. remember to compensate for the decay in the intensity value by pushing it up e.g. 5.
