You got me pretty lost now. The only thing I could suggest is to ask Minstrel what his render settings were.
|
Simple : What is the function of HDRI basicly
|
Render out that image without the HDRI, and then compare them, and then you will find out the difference.
 |
you don't have shadows enabled... are you even in mental ray???
once you are in mental ray, if you're in Maya version is 6.5 or above, there is actually a button to set up the dome. |
HDR images are used to ight the scene, I.e they give off light that then interacts with your objectsgiving it the look of it being in the environment.
What I think your not doing is swithcing on final gather |

You need to turn down the colour gain on the HDR image (look in the place 2d file node.
Its not as easy and just applying a HDR and bingo its going to work, you need to play with the settings, to fine tune it. |
first of all, your using 8.5,
just go down to the environment tab (in the rendersettings at the bottom) and enter in the HDR image, and get rid of the half-dome you created. |
I'm using maya 8.0
|
my mistake, haha, either way there is a button to make it for you.
in the render settings, its in the image based lighting section in the render settings window. |
