Random Object Placement

I have a plane and i want to duplicate an object at random parts and in groups (so they're not completely spread everywhere but somewhat clustered in parts)

is there an easy way to do this? i dont particularly feel like duplicating the object and placing them everywhere.

*edit* i also want them to be scaled randomly

use MEL to randomly duplicate, place and scale them. Should be really simple and a good maya scripting exercise.

I would use a particle system on a plane, but if you just want a script that will randomly afftect the translation, totation or scale of an object... you can use mine.

If you duplicate your object many times with an offset then you can run this script to randomize things so it doesn't look too neat and tidy.

thanks a lot...i havent done anything with MEL yet, so it'd be a little difficult to create a script...but i'll probably just try it to learn.

i thought about using a particle system...i'll try that...and thanks for the script too :)
