poly to sub-d mess
1 Attachment(s)
Hello folks,
I'm making a car which is currently in polys and I'm trying to convert them to sub-division surfaces. I'm not sure where I'm going wrong but on all panels of the car the converted surface looks messy. I have never used sub-d's before but I assume that they are not meant to look like this so if anyone has any ideas where I've gone wrong I would totally appreciate the help. Thanks, Mat. |
I don't mess with SubDs myself much, but I know you do want to maintain quads throughout. Looks like you are for the most part. Beveling the edges a bit might help. Also want to make sure all your verts are welded (merged) properly

Thanks for the advice. There are a couple of tri's on the mesh, i'll get rid of them and try again but if it persists I think I'll give the sub-d's a wide berth on this occasion. Take it easy,

Hello,
My car has been put on hold for a bit as my computer decided to get a bit sick & I lost pretty much everything on my hard drive!! Oh well lesson learned, MAKE BACK UPS!!! I have started again but alot of my enthusiasm has left on this one. Anyway, the method that I'm using is using a poly block then splitting up the seperate components of the car. you only need to model one side of the car as they are normally symmetrical. There are loads of ways to make anything, none of them are the correct way. I rekon you should just do it whatever way makes you happy. Hope that helps, take it easy, Mat. |
thanks
thanks for the help.
its really confusing because there are so many ways and trying to choose the right one is difficult Simon |
Hey HappyMat
Dont fear the SubD way, I use them all the time!! Its just subpatches that you've got there because of the triangles, if you look closely they have tesselated to four sides, which is how they would look if you convert to poly on a higher level of faces. I can also happen on any subd surface with four sided polys too. Its only where the edges want to join to another edge. _J |
Cheers for that jango,
Is there anything you can do about the sub patches and how do they affect the model (apart from looking a mess)? Mat. |
