motion tracking question

Not sure if anyone will know here but I figured I'd ask here first since I'm already a member here.

I want to motion track some video I have. The camera is shooting in a single spot on a tripod. I'm going to place a 3d object that's going to move. How do I go about this? Every tutorial I see involves a non moving object and I was wondering if I'm going to be placing a moving object into the scene will I have to somehow track a moving object in the video, or will all the non moving motion track markers be all I need?

Well, it depends on what software you're going to be using. What you're wanting to do is very simple.

One way, if using PFTrack, or even easier (and cheaper) using it's lower-end cousin PFHoe, all you need to do is load in the footage, choose your camera type (in your case a nodal pan), and click track.

Easy.

Would you need to track the footage on a still source? I would track if the camera moved bit if its still then theres no point really.

Get any camera data that you may have and then match this to the Maya camera.

Make up some simple geo to match the geo in the footage then use that as a reference for the moving object, pretty much it for a simple still shot.

alright thank you both for the help, it sounds like it'll be much easier than I'm making it out to be.

If you need a camera tracker, here's a good (free) one.
