This is my first attempt at realistic rendering in Maya 4.5, what do you guys think?

but the reflection in the table is too strong and looks too perfect. maybe the amount of reflection can be controlled by a blurry image - so it is not perfectly polished.

This is absolutely an outdoor image I think!
Maybe the gloss on the table is too thick for being a marble slate.

Yeah you're all right!

The 'table' (just a plane with a procedural texture on it) is way too perfect and reflective.

Eh.. nothing really wrong with the table. Whats wrong is there's no background image, so it kind of makes the table look funny. Put the image you used for the reflection map in the background and you should be good. That black background is just too "jarring"... no pun intended. :)
