If you go to http://www.3d-palace.com
You will find a video tutorial about a Space Marine for 3D Max, it has Reference Images Pack, which you can use in Maya.

Intermediate 3ds Max 003 - Space Marine
Description:
The idea of the Marine Tutorial is to get to grips with a few max creation methods. Games are changing rapidly so this tutorial is by no means the end all of modeling but a stepping stone for the beginner. Eventually it will cover Modeling, Unwrapping, Texturing, Rigging and a Walk Cycle. This first release is the modelling section, during this tutorial you will see how to model a basic head and body. The tutorial is made using 3D Studio Max 8 however, most of the modelling techniques can be traced back to Max 5 and are pretty much compatible with most modelling software.

The idea for the marine set is to begin to look at next generation games and incorporate such details as normal mapping and detailed fx shaders. An additional set will expand upon the basics creating a high detail chaos marine. Character modeling, low polycount modeling, modeling from reference planes, the full use of 3DS Max polymodeling toolset, and more.
