CHrome material not reflectin Fire?? Help Please
 
I am using just the built in maya Fire FX on some type and there is a chrome shader applied to the stove it is sitting on...however if you take a close look at the picture the reflection is just a black box??? any help would be great its for school thanks

did you make the fire particles visible in reflections? (in the render stats attributes)

grab a particle and open the attribute editor

in the second tab (by default if it's the only particle emitter you have it's called particleShape1) and open up the render stats

check the visible in reflections

Thank you so much for your help, I did what you said, and yes I am now getting refection, however that weird black box is still there in the reflection...I tried turning of cast, and recieve shadows.. didnt help, even with no lights still the same problem??? its like it is rendering the particle container or something weird??

Generally what chrome is, is just 100% reflection. You need to have an environment for it to reflect. Create a large sphere, turn it's primary visibility, cast shadows, and receive shadows off. Then assign a lambert to it. Set the color to black. Assign a file texture to the incandescence, and choose an environment you want it to reflect. For example, a kitchen or something. Now render. It should reflect something.

thanks and that makes sense...however this "black box" relfection is only an issue when using the fire??? if i delete the fire effect that black box goes away as well

perhaps it's related to render settings somewhere else? what is that material that you've put on the stove? how did you set it up?

are you using mental ray?

perhaps it's related to the mental ray settings
find the ray tracing part in the render settings and boost the reflections and refractions count up a bit (although i dont actually think that would do anything but might be worth trying)

It has to be that envSphere you have plugged into the reflection color on it's body, it just doesn't seem to play nice with the fire and it's not happening with the object that the plate is resting on. I made a bright green plane for it to reflect and it worked fine as long as the envSphere doesn't get a chance to kick in. You can rework the chrome shader and encapsulate the scene in a textured sphere or dome as NextDesign mentioned.
