Geforce FX

do you lot think its worth waiting til april time for the geforce fx? sure its gunna kick sum major ass, but its also gunna hurt ur wallet! and seeing as games dont have to be played at their amazingly bestest, will you just settle for a geforce 4 ti? and then theres the whole issue of not many mboards (and hardly any dual mboards) that support agp pro 8x

what are ur views?

personally id love to get my hands on it, but seein as i want a dual AMD system, i cant get an FX cos the mbaord wont support agp8x :(

BabyDuck 01-12-2002 09:19 PM

nobody forces you to use the agp 8x. they better make fx compatible with lower speed agp. i do believe though that waiting for the fx is good. and if it will only mean that the gf4/quadro4 drops with price significantly down. but then, there is never a good time to buy hardware - it is always outdated within at most 6 months.

just my $0.02

yeah that wud be good if the prices of gf4's dropped :D but is the FX really worth that long wait and that high price tag?

Hard to say until some actual benchmarks come out, but i think it will be. Discreet are doing some sort of patch for Max which will take advantage of the new nv30 features - if A|W do the same then it'll definatly be worth getting!
I'll be getting one at the same time Doom3 comes out :) my ti4200 will last out til then no worries.

is the GF FX going to be amazing for games, but also amazing for graphics? like a hybrid of the ti4600 and the xgl900 ?

probably not. the chip of course will be able to handle both, but nvidia might stick with one driver for games and one for premium price for graphics.

Nem 01-12-2002 11:12 PM

oh so ur saying theyll probably release something like GF FX ti5000 for games, and GF FX ti6000 for graphics? different cards for different jobs?

kal 01-12-2002 11:26 PM

I cant remember the exact figures, but there was a benchmark nvidia published for spec view perf(which tests raw OpenGL performance) and the Geforce FX was about 3 times faster than the Wildcat 6210. Of course this is somthing from nvidia so it could well be BS, but if thats anything to go by then it sure will be nice for graphics!

Nem 01-12-2002 11:28 PM

sweet!! if thats true i HAVE to wait! but then theres the AGP8x thing :( do nvidia expect everyone to have a AGP8x mboard?!?!

i am only speculating. if i were a business man, and could sell a blue car to lots of ppl for $100, and then have the same car painted in red (same production cost) which looks faster and sell it to a few ppl that are willing to pay $10000. then why would i not paint the car red as "limited" edition and have the majority drive the boring cheap blue car ;)

Nem 02-12-2002 12:00 AM

because this is nvidia and theyre too stingy to sell cheap cards :p but theyre also meant to keep home users happy :) thats what a penguin told me once

kal 02-12-2002 01:21 AM

nem dont worry about 8x - it'll be compatible with 4x motherboards too :)

Nem 02-12-2002 01:24 AM

but seeing as the mbaord will only be 4x, and the gfx card will be 8x, does that mean a lot of the powerful capabilities of the gf FX would be lost? :(

kal 02-12-2002 01:27 AM

no

Nem 02-12-2002 01:31 AM

then, um, may seem a bit of a stupid question, but whats the point in the different speeds?
