Dark spots at the poles of a transformed sphere?

I know this has to be a simple explanation for this but what causes (and how do I fix) dark spots that occur on tranformed NURBS spheres (see attached image)? Is this just inherent in the object? Converting to poly seems to take care of it but I'm still curious if there's a fix while still in NURBs. Anyone?

Try inserting some isoparms toward the pole.

Give it 4 years, and I'm sure you'll be shooting out the answers, too. :)
