2-the pc temperature always normal.
3-many company use linux(the best reason)

The big question is which linux and how?

Im not sure as to how many studios use Linux, but I suspect it wont be many, with most studios wanting support for their current systems (MAC OS and Windows). 3D World did a quick article on the trends in studios between MACs and PC that was covered in issue 101 or 102 (I can't remember), and tbh this is a never ending argument for most MAC and PC users.

But the short answer is they both have their good points and their bad points.

As for linux, well those users really are in a niche with there own user set, maybe someone here knows roughly how many studios have a linux system the use for development, I think more than likely Linux/Unix is used as a backend or middleware system for file storage or even render farms.

Why does Linux run faster? Easy Windows has so much gubbins tied into it that it takes a good chunk of RAM to even get up and running fast enough. Leaving you 12Kb to use for your renders :p

Linux/Unix has less resource overheads when its running freeing up processor and RAM for more important tasks.

linux is a good OS tbh, but its lack of formal support can be an issue, or if you go for support via Suse or Redhat then you better get you wallets out.

I believe that this article will be enlightening.

A direct quote of the intro, for those who may not wish to read the many pages:

"All the big film studios primarily use Linux for animation and visual effects. Perhaps no commercial Linux installation is larger than DreamWorks Animation, with more than 1,000 Linux desktops and more than 3,000 server CPUs."

Go Linux! :attn:

LOL...

Is that tru...

3D World (it is on edition 101) stated that the big stuidos are uisng windows and the trend points to more MACS hitting studio desktops...

As I said I would think Linux.Unix is used primarily as a Middleware or Backend system. Even though its free (Yeah right), I still say Windows is the most dominent, followed by MAC and then Linux drawing up the rear :P

TBH guys, every magazine will push its own product to its intended target as way to make you feel more like tyhe status quo. But in relaity studios use various bits of software and os, to enhance or save. Linux is not the big money saver ppl would think, check out the yearly support costs for the free OS... Ouch I say.

Linux is free. When you pay Red Hat for their distro of Linux (or Novell) you pay for support, which is essentially a safety net so management types have someone to blame when they make a mistake. :)

Anyways, I have to say that render farms are popular with Linux. Titanic, I believe was made using SGI systems running IRIX (SGI's UNIX) and rendered on a bunch of Alpha 21264s running Linux, so you are right about the middleware and backend.

Yeah...

Thats been my feeling from documentaries watched and articles that I have read.

Pixar use Linux on their render farm as far as I can tell, I mean its faster and more stable when its given a lot of data to process.

So to answer the question lol.

Linux is used, but not extensivly as a front end/desktop system for asset creation. You will more than likely see it used for asset storage, file management and the heavier back end systems, like render farms.

So we know that Linux isn't used that much for content creation, but what about in the digital intermediate stage of the pipeline?

Here's some examples of high-end film colouring tools from IRIDAS for Linux:

30 grand for the most high end versions!
