There is, give us another week or two and we'll come up with something interesting!

darecarce 09-02-2012 12:23 AM

How about Creating your favorite cartoon character from some of the animated films that got out so far. for example, wall-e ( the robot) , Gry from despicable me, Mr Fredriksont from UP ect..

bullet1968 09-02-2012 12:37 AM

It was posted here before...cant remember who...a single object and lighting convey a message? a memory or something.

cheers bullet

It's a good idea, just a bit worried we might get kicked of the internet for copyright infringement :P

I still think caricature challenage would be a winner - plus they funny looks of some celebs would be funny

Might also sell some of Jays "Ramseys" Tut`s

ColdWave 20-02-2012 08:01 PM

Let's refresh and start a new challenge shall we ? I will join this time :)

joverall22 20-02-2012 08:51 PM

Sounds like a new challenge is brewing. I hope to see it soon :)

MamoruK 23-02-2012 02:06 AM

I have your challenge. reinvent something from one of your favorite cartoons as a kid. For most of us that would be circa 1985-95. Example: Exo Squad, Dino Riders, Dinosaucers, Gargoyles. That good old saturday morning stuff you got up early to watch!

joverall22 23-02-2012 04:11 AM

Mam I think that is a great idea. I would love to recreate a Saturday morning cartoon.

puneet.3d 29-02-2012 09:58 AM

so what is the new challenge?

honestdom 29-02-2012 10:33 AM

i've probably suggested this before, but what about a group challenge?
one modeller, texture artist, rigger, lighter, animator
two or three teams maybe making a full cg environment and character/vehicle? much more chance of everyone finishing if other people are relying on you and if the task isn't quite as daunting.

jsprogg 29-02-2012 12:06 PM

great idea Dom .. not sure of the logistics of choosing a team or even if there are enough of each specialty on this forum but i would love to be in a group like that.

honestdom 29-02-2012 12:49 PM

yeah cool :)
perhaps you don't need someone with a speciality, and in fact a generalist role would be more useful i guess.
this could work for someone who wants to learn more animation but maybe doesn't want to do much rigging. or someone who wants to do lighting but not animation.
choosing a team could just come down to a team leader.

bullet1968 29-02-2012 01:07 PM

yes you have dom...(I think)....I would agree to that....not that I am a specialist in anything other than procrastination and lack of time/resources....I dont think choosing a team is an issue...let it be a rolling straw thing like in school...that way you DONT have the best of everything and it is a real challenge?

cheers bullet

stwert 29-02-2012 01:26 PM

I second a group challenge... PM people that you want to work with, maybe? Although I think it may actually decrease the chance of finishing, cause one person gets too busy and the whole team is left hanging. I can see that being a likely scenario.

Perfecto 29-02-2012 02:15 PM

I also think a group challenge is a cool idea. I agree about the high possibility of group members bailing out before the projects are complete as stwert mentioned. I personally don't mind bailing out of a competition when other stuff comes up or if I lose interest, however, if I'm part of a group that is relying on me, I stick it out til the end at all costs.

Hopefully, as honestdom said, others would be more willing to finish as well, especially if it's not to daunting of a project.

honestdom 29-02-2012 02:54 PM

I would say if someone has to drop out, its no big deal getting someone else to join the team to pick up the work.

MamoruK 29-02-2012 06:37 PM

i like this idea only thing is that it would need enough people to actually make enough teams to do. stipulation i think could be added is that everyone who wants to participate puts in what hey want to go in as 1st and then as a back up based on their strengths, like me i would put in as animator 1st and modeler 2nd based on my skills. The moderator puts the teams together and then do the competition in the style of the 11 second club.

tweetytunes 29-02-2012 07:10 PM

Id be down but only 4 the modelling

Chirone 29-02-2012 07:57 PM

I'm not against a group challenge so jokingly I see it as a popularity contest if we all pm our wanted team ;)

stwert 29-02-2012 08:10 PM

I think in order to prove to the admins that a group challenge is feasible and would be popular, some people should do a short 2 on 2 battle in the battle forum. If that doesn't happen, it's unlikely a full team challenge will be successful.

MamoruK 29-02-2012 08:59 PM

that would be provided that between the 2 people that all aspects could be achieved. Because this idea of a group battle would take about 4-5 people to complete each one. Modeler, texture(could be combined with modeling job), rigger, animator, effects (lighting etc.).

So a 2 on 2 battle would require each person to have 2-3 of these skills at their disposal.

stwert 29-02-2012 09:15 PM

Well this example wouldn't necessarily need all aspects... just try a still image with a modeller and a texturer/lighter/renderer.

Challenge: Create a character in an environment on the topic of heros or villains. The modeller models the character and hands it off to the texturer while they model the environment. The lighter textures and lights the environment while the modeller offers support from the sidelines. I dunno, just get something going.
Duration, two weeks?

MamoruK 29-02-2012 09:47 PM

thats feasable

MamoruK 01-03-2012 06:06 AM

bullet1968 01-03-2012 08:09 AM

joverall22 01-03-2012 09:39 AM

nice bedtime thoughts

Nilla 01-03-2012 11:19 PM

New challenge posted here

The theme is extremely broad so it's open for pretty much anything, it can be about lighting/dynamics/animation rather than modeling for anyone who wants. Just don't want to post a challenge that excludes modeling because not sure anyone would join :P

Also if anyone wants to join forces and collaborate on a project I don't see why not, like mentioned above just not sure how you'd organize a team challenge. But it would be cool.

joverall22 01-03-2012 11:39 PM

Wow a team challenge now that would be interesting and what a huge learning experience it would be to team up I like that idea not sure how to organize it though.

Perfecto 29-03-2012 04:37 PM

I don't really have time to participate in any challenges but thought you all might like this.

It shows what a developer did with only one 256x512 texture. Could make for an interesting challenge. Create a scene and use only one texture of a certain specified size.

joverall22 29-03-2012 09:27 PM

How is all of that really in only one small texture file that is incredible though I don't know if I necessarily believe it. I would like to see the actual texture file

Chirone 29-03-2012 10:00 PM

looks more like he had to use 2

did you read the article? He mentions a few things he tried. But as you say.. a shame he doesn't show the texture files

He does share his UDK files though it seems (I dont have the Unreal stuff so I can't see what is actually in the rar file).

Perfecto 29-03-2012 11:42 PM

Yeah, it is hard to believe but the idea sounds like a cool challenge I think.

stwert 30-03-2012 12:04 AM

I would think there would have to be better understanding or a tutorial on this, cause I don't really get it either, so I think you'd have a hard time getting participants for a challenge. Otherwise you'll just get a bunch of tiled entries looking like wallpaper... haha.
