July - Normal - rotbol

I'm in!

This is my first animation, but i'll post as normal anyways..

I have started a huge animation project with a friend so i really need to learn before we get to the animation part heheh.

i've chosen the 2kindsofmetal clip.

idea:

man and dog is walking in a scrapyard.
Man is telling dog about the two kinds of metal and wich one the dog can chew at.
The dog is only listening with half an ear cause he is busy finding interesting stuff to chew on.

As i dont have a dog model available atm i'll focus on animating the man. If i get the time i'll try my luck at the dog too :)

I have started blocking out the animation.

Not much to show yet, but i'm starting to get the hang of it... i think :P

Heres a little storyboard for you all, to show my progress.
(the image is pretty large hence the link)

i thought so

DOH!

I was so thrilled when i prepared for a playblast tonight. I had keyed all the contact positions for the walk and switched all tangents on leg keys to stepped tangents to show the poses and hide the ugly transitions :P

For some odd reason i played the animation in my top view and there it was laughing in my face!! I had made a BIG mistake! All my positions where made from the pelvis movement, thus making the walk move 1 step forward, half a step backwards.

Oh well.. I learned something:

The feet moves the pelvis, swinging it over the pivot of the foot.

I might have to rethink my scene a bit as i want the animation happening in the frame and pretty much up close and with the new knowledge my character will hit the spot long before he's supposed to.

Back to the drawing board, so to speak :)

hey ransick. i'd like to finish this one too.. hope i can make it :)

I have redone the first 120 frames. its only the contact poses, played with flat tangents.

enjoy :)

Time for an update!

I've been working on the 48 frames of walking. heres the result. I'm pretty happy about it myself since it is my first walk.

what do you think?

the walk

mtmckinley 19-07-2004 12:58 PM

Not bad.

The overall movement is a bit jerky.
The knees snap a bit.
There's not enough pelvis/spine movement. He's not shifting his weight from one leg to another. His pelvis would twist a bit as well as bob up and down with the movement.

Keep it up!

Thanks Mike! I know about the knees snapping. it appeared when i messed with the pelvis.

I'll look into it later.. I have a lot of acting to do first :D
