light rays shining through from behind an object?

i'm trying to create a lighting effect of (volumetric) light rays coming through the doorway but whatever i do to the light and object settings, the light fog just keeps going through the object and doesn't give me the effect. How do i block the light with the wall and get the rays to come through only the opening in the wall?

the effect i'm after is a bit like lights rays shining from behind movie title text type thing...

please help!

thanks
lori

did you try reversing the normals on the geometry?

yup tried that. no go...

tried both dmaps and raytrace too... no luck :(

so you've turned on shadowcasting attributes? That would be my first question.

Maya's volumetrics are notoriously bad and always give very squiffy results. Can you post a scene and I will take a look.

If you haven't resoved the problem yet,...
I recreated the scene from scratch and think I got it working. No idea why it didn't do it in your scene. Maybe you can figure it out compairing with my scene (attached).

fog lights

hey lory, i think you totally messed up your depth map shadows. try adjusting some of its attributes and see if it'll work

:ninja:
