These chilis were modeled and rendered in Lightwave version 7.5 in 2003 for SimplyLightwave.

I like it too it's simple and nice. We had a free tutorial on SimplyLightwave for creating this specific render but we had to take it off the new site because the audio was beyond saving. Check out Philip's gallery as well, http://www.liquid-arts.de/new_gallery.htm he's made a lot of pretty stuff :)

Is it a bump texture on the shader that gives it the lumpiness, or some kind of billow in the spec? would anyone hassard a guess?

If I remember correctly it was just a noise layer added to the bump channel.
