Cataloging Textures

I have been putting off a task because I don't want to do it. I need to go through all my back issues of 3dWorld CDs and copy the textures and models into a folder for Maya.

My problem is, I have no system yet. I am not sure how to break them up or where to put them in Maya. Or perhaps I should not put them in Maya at all.

How does one catalog hunderds of textures, and put them somewhere to get at when you are in Hypershade and need a texture?

Have you developed a good texture catalog system?

Just archive them on CD and organize them according to use...dirtmaps, skies, metals, wood, tiles, etc...or according to project type (i.e., sci-fi, creature/character skin, etc.). Then when you get to that stage in a project where you're ready to start texturing, assuming you have a general idea of what you want your scene to look like, grab a bunch of files and store them in your project's source files folder or wherever you want.
