Joystick

I made this Joystick from a really neat tutorial.
Im a low-level renderer but I think it came out pretty nice.

looks nice
the wire looks weird in the first one... I dont know if its just me...
but I like the model
try to render it in mental ray - production
im just starting in maya but im pretty sure that with a good light and a production render it will looks really nice :)
ill try to do something like that too soon
it looks interesting

Terril 12-03-2008 11:46 AM

Well I re-touched it a bit in photoshop.

mikeyduf 12-03-2008 12:04 PM

looks better now
but theres only one thing that I dont really like... its the white "reflection" or I dont know how to call it... on the top of the joystick
maybe modify a bit the texture to reduce the spot and turn up the reflectivity a bit

well... like I said... I started last week so im not professionnal I've done only one model in maya
but thats my opinion

hope it helps you

Terril 12-03-2008 12:37 PM

Yea Im not so sure how to fix that.
Im terrible with mental ray, dont know why it does that.

mikeyduf 12-03-2008 01:10 PM

hehe its ok dont worry im not the best too
so... first I think that your texture can be the problem
so go in your hypershade and double click on the texture
and its probably a binn
so after double clicking go in specular shading
and play with the two lines till you get it like you want
im not sur if it will help you...
other thing... when you render be sure that you are in production for the final setting because I've already forget it and I was in draft
and there's a free video tutorial on the web site for rendering maybe its a good idea to look at it (I think ill take a look too)

A good job

I dont think reflectivity should be turned up on any of it, that would just make it look made of a ceramic material. try to turn the specular down to diffuse the hilight more and give it a plastic feel.

rendering wise, duh...I have to advise you, learn the basics of rendering first before delving into Mental ray. This is a common misconception with alot of new dudes alike. Just cos its MR doesnt mean its going to render you an AWSOME image, Ive lost count of the amount of renders Ive done in standard Maya Software that have left peoples MR renders behind.

I'll have to hurry with my next tute for this site on rendering....

Cheers
Jay

cute render, only prob i see is that really blown out highlight on the sphere, the material needs to be tweaked some, and theres a bit of aliasing.

Argh, I looked at other models on this forum and geez, they just really depress me by how good they look, sometimes I keep thinking Il never get that good.
