realistic rock formations

how do you make realistic rock formations? something like mountains

mtmckinley 03-03-2004 03:37 AM

very carefully. ;)

lol

I usually painstakingly model them by hand.

Psuedo Realizm 03-03-2004 03:47 AM

are there any techniques i should know... i looked on learning maya and couldnt find any tuts on it.. maybe someone would know another place that would have rock modeling tutorials

mtmckinley 03-03-2004 04:51 AM

I'd be surprised if there was a rock making tutorial anywhere. It's not exactly "fun" persay. Biggest thing to keep in mind is organic irregularity. Once you get enough rocky formations, you can probably get good use out of them by reusing them in different orientations and such.

Small example:

Wasn't there something like automatical terrain generation? :S You scale that to be mountainy too right? :)

NitroLiq 03-03-2004 02:08 PM

Start with a cube and extrude , scale, and move faces until it looks like the rock you want. Or, use displacement mapping on a plane. Or...create a profile curve and loft a bunch of edited NURBS circles and tweak 'til your heart's content. There's also a terrain plugin over at highend3d....I forget the name offhand, but that may do the trick.

alright thank you everyone this project is for the new challenge i'm going for a floating continents, the continents are going to look like they were previously ripped from the ground.. thus the base of them is going to be all rock and dirt i'll post a pic to give you guys the idea of what i'm trying to go for here

dragonsfire 03-03-2004 04:40 PM

U could invest in Bryce and create terain form their and import. I have used the rock generator maell then scaled them out etc also.

Alan 03-03-2004 04:44 PM

no need, just rough out the basic shape and then displace and bump map them to look like rocks. how close are you going to get to them?

Psuedo Realizm 03-03-2004 05:41 PM

alright thanks i've never bump mapped before but i see what your saying and that would probably work best.. i'm not nearly to texturing yet which gives me plenty of time to look for a bump mapping tut.

Going for a Roger Dean type of thing?

Psuedo Realizm 03-03-2004 07:01 PM

i'm not sure.. who is roger dean?

NitroLiq 03-03-2004 08:18 PM

Roger Dean was the artist that did all the old "Yes" and "Asia" album covers. Do a google search and I'm sure you'll find a bunch of his artwork.

Psuedo Realizm 04-03-2004 02:10 AM

hmm.. that is some interesting artwork.. i like it
