object import: scaling and/or translation problem...

Hey Guys,

One problem I repeatedly encounter is this:

I import an object into Maya and it’s HUGE!

Not only HUGE but it’s placement is MILES away from the grid.

I fight to get it into a more workable position but as I do this the object tends to “disappear” through the “walls” of the workspace and I have to move it around to keep it viewable inside the workspace.

I’ve tried changing the object’s scale but I still can’t seem to master it’s placement in relation to the grid.

Anyone else encountered this? I’m sure it’s an easy problem to fix but any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

You can use snap to grid (hold down 'v' while you translate objects). And as far as your object disappearing, thats your camera's far clip plane and you can change that in the camera's attribute editor, you can just drop a couple more zeros in there. There's also the camera section of the Maya preferences, it'll affect the default persp camera.
