Tank

i know tanks have been done before, but i wanted to try my hand at one, i'm trying to keep it my original idea.. but i'm using a M1A1 pic as a referance just to see how the basic tank is set up

Psuedo Realizm 07-03-2004 06:02 PM

is there a tutorial out there on how to make treads?

Ok here it is with treads now, those things sucked.. this is my first low poly project.. if anyone could, i'd like to know how well i'm doing

Doing great, but can we see the reference?
and as for the tutorial: I don't know where to find it, but so many people are asking about em... it's almost worth a sticky  ;) :alien:

For low poly, you probably wouldn't model individual treads but would instead do as you have and have an animated texture simulate the moving.

Psuedo Realizm 07-03-2004 07:45 PM

yeah, the treads are pretty much finished... i just wanted them to look like that wrapped around the wheels.. they kinda look like there a high poly then i would have liked.. maybe i can fix that later

Psuedo Realizm 07-03-2004 07:47 PM

oh yeah the referance is out of a drawing book i have, i could probly scan it in a little bit.. but i dont know what the rules are on distributing other peoples published and copywrited work

fredriksson 07-03-2004 07:49 PM

It looks nice, maybe lower the segments on the roadwheels some, they look quite dense.

mtmckinley 07-03-2004 07:52 PM

I agree. You might be able to get away with doing all the wheels in a big transprancy map, depending on what kind of polycount range you're going for.

Psuedo Realizm 07-03-2004 07:54 PM

sorry i'm still rather new, do you mean just fake the wheels and put them in a texture to make it look like they are modeled on there? but in reality its just one texture?.. if so thats pretty creative.. i just need to learn how to do it

Psuedo Realizm 07-03-2004 07:59 PM

ok now i'm starting the understand the key to a low poly model is in the texturing... i'll remember this on my next tank model.. i think i'm just going to continue on with this one.. it should be a nice addition to my portfolio/demo reel

mtmckinley 07-03-2004 08:04 PM

Just depends on what you're going for in terms of polycount. RTS games do that kind of thing a lot.

Psuedo Realizm 07-03-2004 08:59 PM

my favorite games are FPS games, if i can get into any kind of career making games i wouldnt want to make an FPS game

mtmckinley 07-03-2004 09:03 PM

heh, don't really have a lot of that kind of choice in the industry... you pretty much do whatever the company does. My studio, for example, is doing an rpg and might be doing an RTS before it's over with.
